What is Choral Evensong? Choral Evensong in the Anglican tradition is the liturgy of the office rendered in sung fashion. In the Catholic tradition, it is the Vespers sung in the evening by the choir. Evensong is a perfect fit for St. Luke’s Catholic Ordinariate a former Anglo-Catholic parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. The pastor and people of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church [Bladensburg, Maryland] were received and confirmed into the Catholic Church on October 9, 2011, by the Archbishop of Washington, Donald Cardinal Wuerl.
Why celebrate Evensong? Evensong offers to us the beautiful opportunity for the faithful to gather for evening prayer, deepening one’s experience in both the mysteries and fullness of our faith.
How long does Choral Evensong last? Approximately 45 minutes
What should I expect at Evensong? Hymns, readings, and traditional Anglican chant sung by the choir. In Choral Evensong the choir sings on “behalf of” the congregation. The prayers or Suffrages and the Responses between the Officiant and People are also sung between the Officiant and Choir on behalf of the people, allowing the congregation time to meditate and enter into deeper prayer through words and music. The congregation joins in the singing of the hymns, the Apostle’s Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. The congregation joins in silent meditation through the prayers and canticles.
Will there be a sermon? No.
How will I know what I should do during the service? A booklet outlining the service will be available
What is a canticle? A canticle (from the Latin canticulum, a diminutive of canticum, song) is a hymn (strictly excluding the Psalms) taken from the Bible.
How will attending Evensong brighten my day? St. Augustine is credited with having said that to “sing a hymn is to have prayed twice.” Prayer is talking to God, communicating with Him on a deep and personal level. Prayer is an opportunity to spend quality time with the Lord. Evensong is an old tradition of evening prayer with others. Jesus is the Light of the World and spending precious time with Him will brighten your mood and day, anytime, anywhere.
Why is there a reception following Evensong? Yes. Fellowship of the body of Christ is essential and fun. Join our reception gives us a chance to talk and share with those who have celebrated with us.
